Hear about the Center's Community Arts and art education classes, happenings, work-study jobs, student grants, and opportunities for you to become a professional "citizen artist." Then join us for a walk through Temescal to meet our neighbors and see their diverse aesthetics. We'll discuss the important relation between art and society. Wear your walking shoes!

Applications due for Community Student Fellows
Center for Art and Public Life
Applications for the first round of hiring of Community Student Fellows (CSFs) are due Friday, September 10.
Find detailed job postings in the Student Affairs offices' work-study binders. Second-year undergraduates through graduates are eligible.
Submit your application, including a cover letter, work-study application, and resume to the CSF application drop box located in the lobby of the Center for Art and Public Life, 5275 Broadway, Oakland campus.
Teaching artists. Ten positions available. Assist teachers in K-12 public schools in developing and teaching art or art-integrated classes.
Art Esteem. Six to ten positions available, one fashion emphasis. Art instructors assistants needed for middle school–aged students. Art Esteem works to eliminate violence by supporting creative and educational programs that transform the spirit and build peaceful and loving communities.
Creative Growth Arts Center. Printmakers needed.
National Institute for Art and Disabilities. Curatorial and gallery assistants needed.
Children's Hospital Oakland. Artist-in-residence assistant needed.
Legacy Project at the San Francisco Performing Arts Library and Museum. Cultural arts oral history book maker assistant needed.
Museum of the African Diaspora. Designers for web content needed.

Lisa Ricci is an arts administrator, educator, and artist. She is currently the marketing manager of Yerba Buena Center for the Arts and teaches workshops and courses on the business side of the art world, including "Art Stars Anonymous" at the San Francisco Art Institute. She will discuss how to find the exhibition venue that is right for you.
Showing your artwork in a gallery is important, but how do you get your foot in the door? See what it takes to participate in the local art scene, and introduce yourself and your work to gallery artists and curators. Learn about exhibition venues available to artists, from commercial galleries to alternative spaces, and how to research and take advantage of opportunities. This presentation will provide an overview of the type of exhibition venues and an introduction to gallery guidelines and what artists need to know when preparing their submission materials.

Art and museum educators, Carey Fruzza and Evelyn Orantes from the Oakland Museum of California discuss the connections between exhibitions, museums, and education. Strategies of museum education, artists as educators in the museum, and the museum's connection to community will be discussed.

Regina Machado—Brazilian artist, author, and educator—will discuss oral tradition and the art of storytelling as they relate to the learning process. Ms. Machado is on the art education faculty at the University of Sao Pablo. Her pedagogy emphasizes the oral storytelling tradition as a methodology in teacher education.
