Growing up on a wildlife preserve in California surrounded by farms, homesteaders, nature writers, and the Tahoe National Forest, Maria Ryan Sculpture 2005 spent most of her time outdoors. When she got to CCA and heard about the availability of Center Student Grants, an idea germinated, and the outcome proved life-changing.

Photography BFA student Sam Slater led his successful project "The View From Here" in 2009. In collaboration with Mission Pie and funded by a Center Student Grant, Sam's project taught San Francisco Mission neighborhood youth 35mm camera techniques and created a book and billboard of their photos "harvested" from their environment. Watch Sam's project presentation from the Socially Engaged Projects event.

2010 Center for Art and Public Life Student Grants
Center Student Grants fund projects initiated by CCA students who are working with a community organization to use the arts, architecture, design, and writing to address issues of social justice, diversity, and community development.
This year seven student initiated projects were awarded funds with projects taking place in China, in support of Haiti, and throughout the greater San Francisco Bay Area.
