2011 IMPACT Team Awardees Present their Projects
The inaugural IMPACT Social Entrepreneurship Award recipients will speak about their projects and how they used creative, innovative, and interdisciplinary strategies to address specific social and humanitarian needs.
Come and get inspired by the experiences of these students, and learn about upcoming opportunities to apply for the next round of IMPACT Social Entrepreneurship Awards.

Alumna Maria Ryan Uses Design as Activism »

Growing up on a wildlife preserve in California surrounded by farms, homesteaders, nature writers, and the Tahoe National Forest, Maria Ryan Sculpture 2005 spent most of her time outdoors. When she got to CCA and heard about the availability of Center Student Grants, an idea germinated, and the outcome proved life-changing.

Download the IMPACT Awards application. The application deadline is 5 p.m. Friday, February 11, 2011.
To submit your application email a digital copy of all application materials to IMPACT@cca.edu. In addition, please submit 5 printed copies to the Center for Art and Public Life.

Hamlet on Alcatraz Island »

This fall the performance group We Players will present Shakespeare's Hamlet on Alcatraz Island, and recent graduate Anna Whitehead (MFA Social Practice 2010) has been heavily involved in the project. She was awarded a Center Student Grant to work with at-risk youth, people incarcerated, and people on probation to create large-scale puppets and masks that will be used in the play.

CCA Alumna Maria Ryan, Community Arts in Uganda »

In August CCA alumna Maria Ryan (BFA Sculpture2005) started a community arts project in Africa. Maria emailed over the summer letting me know of her continued community arts practice as well as her upcoming project in Uganda. (Below is an interview with Maria Ryan (MR) and Center for Art in Public Life Design and Marketing Manager Jason Engelund (JE) conducted prior and following Maria's travels.)

The View From Here, a Center Student Grant 2009 »

Photography BFA student Sam Slater led his successful project "The View From Here" in 2009. In collaboration with Mission Pie and funded by a Center Student Grant, Sam's project taught San Francisco Mission neighborhood youth 35mm camera techniques and created a book and billboard of their photos "harvested" from their environment. Congratulations to the students awarded
2010 Center for Art and Public Life Student Grants
Center Student Grants fund projects initiated by CCA students who are working with a community organization to use the arts, architecture, design, and writing to address issues of social justice, diversity, and community development.
This year seven student initiated projects were awarded funds with projects taking place in China, in support of Haiti, and throughout the greater San Francisco Bay Area.
